About Artist

My Art is my Wandering Companion

Hi my name is Shara.  I am an owner and artist who makes all of the art work sold at the Red Studio boutique gallery and e-commerce website.  Everything is made in America.

About 3 years ago I did a bold move and opened my own boutique gallery in Old Town Antique Row in Kensington, MD (2 miles from Washington, DC).  All of the antique dealers told me I would not last a year as my work is modern and people are not looking for modern art in this location.

Fortunately, they were wrong, and I have now built a successful art gallery that inspired other artists to open there own gallery in antique row.

Today I am opening my e-commerce site and publishing books.  I am excited to meet and know every one of you.

I personally answer and read each e-mail I receive to make sure of the best customer care.

If you live around Washington, DC, or are visiting, please drop by and pick up your souvenir.  All of my customers receive one small one-of-a kind art works from my Muse Painting Collection as a gift from me to say thank you for supporting my love and passion for creativity.

 My background:

I born in Iran—Tehran—in an artistic family: an art collector (grandfather), three musicians (grandmother and two of my brothers), and a painter/poet/writer (my oldest sister).   I lived most of my adult life outside of Iran in Europe and Canada, and now finally I have chosen America as my permanent home.

 Teaching Position:

I have taught more than 10 years at the School of Art + Design, Montgomery College and privately at my studio.

 About my style:

I am a multi-disciplined experimental painter and sculptor with an interest in modern art.  I have a very strong classical background in art, but I chose modern art to express my creativity.  To find my own style and invent a new way of making art.

To do that I had to walk into the unknown—where the poet goes.  To make this unknown crossing, in my own journey I need to lean on those who are already a friend of unknown—physical or non-physical guides and teachers.

With art born out of deep connection to my soul, I am awakened anew.  I claim my true life, the one I was meant to live.  I was the one to resist living the life of an artist.  I had to say goodbye to the fake life other wanted me to live.  It is scary and exciting at the same time.

But who you are......the rest will unfold as it should.  Someone once asked a zen master, “what is the essence of wisdom?”  The zen master said, “when spring comes, the grass grows by itself.” When your spring time comes, the grass grows by itself......until then.  Shara

 My favorite art period:

I love the DaDa period, as that period was a very innovative and creative time.

 Masters I study:

Painting: Rembrandt, Picasso, Kandinsky, O’Keeffe,

Sculpture: Rodin, David Smith,

 Other art subjects I love:

Poetry: Rumi, Hafez, Robert Bly, Rilke, Emily Dickinson, Mary Oliver, Antonio Machado, Kabir,

Music: Jazz, blues, classical

My favorite musicians: Bob Dylan, Sting, Diana Krall, Billie Holiday, B.B King, James Taylor, Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Ottmar Libert, Yo-Yo-Ma

 My hobbies:

I love reading books, taking museum trips, walking, and making art (oh yes my work and hobbies are the same—lucky me).  I love to collect quotes, and I am publishing a book of my art work and quotes.

“There is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique.  And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost.  The world will not have it.”  Martha Graham

 Landscape-Collage Painting (The Inner Landscape):

My landscape and collage painting is about the inner landscape, as I don't take pictures or do any sketches from nature.  I love how Eckhart Tolle talks about the artist as an ordinary human who lets images or words come through them.  The artwork is extraordinary, not the artist! The artist is only a hole in a flute............

............You are still an ordinary human.  What is extraordinary is what comes through you into this world.”  As the fourteenth-century Persian poet and Sufi master Hafiz expresses this truth beautifully, “I am a hole in a flute that the Christ's breath moves through.  Listen to this music.”  The Gift, translated by Daniel Ladinsky

 Small Figure (My Goodest):

My small figure painting comes from my love of guesture drawing.  My technique is similar to the “automatic drawing” of Paul Klee, by following the momentary impulses of hand or brain, with as little conscious thought as possible.  I have no predetermined subject in front or in my mind.  I am not trying to reproduce or make a picture but to express an event, even though I might not have any recollection of that event.  These images could be for someone an archetypal image, for others it could be symbolic, or it could just be a manifestation of energy!  What they really are we will never know!  As Joseph Campbell writes, “art work as a tool of the evolution and transformation that will enable the individual and society to realize there unrealized potential.”
